Some random shots of Oakland including downtown, West Oakland (Amtrak), downtown, MLK, and the Fox Theater. I’ve spent quite a bit of time downtown, taking photos of the architecture and business complexes. An area that is changing rapidly is Jefferson and 14th, near Hotel Sutter. The boarded apartment complexes will soon be torn down for development projects. Hotel Sutter was purchased on a contingency plan that the owners move out long term-low rent tenants. I’m unsure of where that initiative stands, but sites list Sutter as officially closed.
Some of the properties I’ve taken photos of were abandoned, and there’s been talk about turning these into low-income shelters. These particular properties were once available for auction but removed, and now tied up in local government bureaucracy. It will be interesting to see what happens, but at the moment, they serve no purpose in a city where the homeless population is increasing steadily.
